Hiking Trail Descriptions

1.  Wood Fern Way (Easy - 0.20 miles)— With a landscaped trailhead featuring a park with picnic tables, this is a short, scenic connector that intersects with the Ground Cedar and Wood Duck Trails. Accessible parking off the main road makes this is a great place to begin a hike.

2.  Wood Duck Trail (Easy - 0.76 miles)— This short, easy hike follows the perimeter of a large pond and affords numerous shady spots to have a picnic or cast a line in the water. Look for the rare Climbing Fern along the headwaters—as well as the Great Blue Heron, Red Tail Hawk and curious turtles coming up for air.

3.  Ground Cedar (Moderate/Strenuous - 1.41 miles)— The southern half of this trail provides a moderate warm-up to the more strenuous northern half.  The southern end features a nice “sliding rock” waterfall.  Abandoned moonshine stills and an old steam engine can also be spotted along this scenic hike.

4.  Super Trail (Easy - 1.90 miles)— Pack a picnic lunch and pile into the truck or jeep for this easy vehicular trail. At the end, the beautiful, secluded Greene Pond awaits, with a large picnic shelter that includes a fireplace, large pit barbecue, tables, a bathroom and a fishing dock making it a great place to spend the afternoon.

5.  Mountain Grouse Trail (Moderate - 0.26 miles)— This short, moderate trail connects with the Super Trail, following some smaller headwaters to the Greene Pond. The heavily wooded surrounding area makes this experience nice and secluded.

6.  Dog Hobble Thicket (Moderate/Strenuous - 2.80 miles)— A close relative of Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Sourwoods, Dog Hobble thickets flourish in April and May. This moderate to strenuous hike leads from a large pond through Flat Woods Park over to The Greene Pond. After roughly twenty minutes you descend into a gully and hear the fast-moving water rush through the rocks.

7.  Turkey Ridge Loop (Moderate - 0.41 miles)— This is a relatively short, moderate hike (less than a half mile) whose name is inspired by the plentiful wild turkeys that frequent this area. This trail is perfect for taking a break and observing the natural surroundings—and occasional whitetail deer that are present.

8.  Flat Woods Park (Easy - 0.57 miles)— An easy hike that gives way to large open areas around an inviting creek. Visitors can wind their way up a hill to take in the view of the southern end of Mountain Park.

9.  Spray Cliff Hollow (Moderate - 0.20 miles) — This very short and moderate trail gets its name from the rare waterfalls that are spread out over a large area allowing the water to drip over the side of the cliff. This trail begins just outside the entrance to Highland Manor and connects to Wood Duck Trail.
